What If I’m Not the Man I’m Supposed to Be?

Written by Brother Crosse | Apr 4, 2025 6:38:51 PM

You wouldn’t have clicked if you didn’t feel the weight of not knowing.

Editor's note: This reflection was written by Brother Crosse as a personal expression of the values he sees at the heart of Freemasonry. While the tone is introspective and modern, the aim is to connect with men seeking growth, purpose, and Brotherhood. It speaks directly to the silent questions many good men carry today.

You’re not lazy. You’re not weak. You’re just tired—of guessing.

You lie in bed with the lights off, scrolling, phone screen fading to black, wondering why—with everything you’ve done right—you still feel like you’ve missed something.

You’ve read the books. You’ve checked the boxes. You’ve held it together when life hit harder than you thought it would.

And still—in the quiet spaces between your responsibilities, you ask the question you can’t say out loud:

What does being a "Good Man" even mean any more?

Let’s Get Real About What a Good Man Is.

It’s not aesthetics. It’s not six-figure incomes or perfect relationships.

A good man is ordinary, but he does extraordinary things! He's gentle in strength, clear when others lie, and present when others take the easy way out. A good man knows his limits—and expands them. He’s not afraid of responsibility. He just wants to know he isn’t carrying it all alone.

You Need to Be Willing.

There’s a myth that real success is reserved for the elite... The gifted.... The chosen few.

But walk into a Masonic Lodge, and here’s what you’ll really see:

Not politicians. Not billionaires. Not perfect men with polished pedigrees.

In the Lodge, you'll find ordinary men, taking action, doing extraordinary things—just like you.

Men who show up after long days at work. Men who teach boys how to be men by the way they live. Men who have failed, fallen, gotten back up—and then helped someone else rise.

If You’re Reading This, You’re Already Halfway There.

Not because this is so inspirational, but because most readers will never stop long enough to question who they’re becoming. Which means something in you still believes there’s more. Something within you wants to build something that will have an impact longer than your time here on Earth.

So What Does It Mean to Be a Good Man in 2025?

It means choosing impact over noise.
Community over isolation.
Structure over confusion.
Depth over performance.
A path over wandering.

And no—you don’t need to have it all figured out.

You just need to take one clear step. That's what we try to help men do inside a Masonic Lodge. Let us walk with you. Start the journey today.

Because in the end, a good man isn’t defined by how much he did alone.
He’s remembered for who he became—because he was able to give back to others.
