You’ve watched the viral YouTube videos. You’ve scrolled past the conspiracy posts on social media. **“Freemasons control the world!”** **“Secret societies are pulling the strings behind governments!”** **“Masons worship \[insert nonsense here\]!”** And it’s **completely false.** But here’s the thing—**misinformation about Freemasonry isn’t new.** It’s been happening for centuries. From political smear campaigns in the 1800s to YouTubers in the 21st century, **Freemasonry has always been a target for those who fear what they don’t understand.** But before you believe everything you hear online, let’s take a look at where these myths really come from—and why they persist. --- ## **Anti-Masonry in the 1800s: America's First “Cancel Culture”** Conspiracy theories about Freemasonry didn’t start on the internet. They started in **American politics.** ### **The Morgan Affair (1826): The Birth of Anti-Masonry** In 1826, a man named **William Morgan**—a disgruntled ex-Mason—threatened to publish a book “exposing” Masonic rituals. Shortly after, he disappeared. - Some say he fled to Canada. - Some say he was paid to vanish. - Some say he was kidnapped. No one knows for sure what happened to Morgan, but **his disappearance fueled a firestorm of paranoia** in the United States. --- ### **The Anti-Masonic Party: The First U.S. Third Party Political Movement** Fueled by the Morgan Affair, politicians saw an opportunity: **Attack Freemasonry and win public favor.** In 1828, the **Anti-Masonic Party** was born—the first third-party political movement in U.S. history. They painted Freemasonry as a **dangerous secret society.** They accused Masons of **controlling courts, banks, and government offices.** They pushed for **bans on any Mason in public office.** The movement gained traction, winning elections and nearly derailing the political careers of **Andrew Jackson (a Freemason of Williamsburg Lodge No. 6, Williamsburg, Virginia) and other prominent leaders.** But by the 1840s, the hysteria had **burned itself out.** Why? Because despite all the accusations, **there was never any real evidence.** The conspiracy collapsed under its own weight. Sound familiar? --- ## **Anti-Masonry Today: The Same Fear, Different Century** Today’s conspiracy theorists aren’t inventing anything new. They’re just **recycling the same tired arguments from the 1800s.** The same fear of the unknown.
